Salem by Tymestalker Salem by Tymestalker
Salem is the finished project for my found art project for my Explorig Art class. It is an art project where you use trash objects to create something artistic. When reading about this project, my initial thought was a fire using toilet paper and paper towel rolls for logs and newspaper to represent the flames. I knew I’d need more items, and my wife had a great suggestion. We had some old and broken CDs that we could use in small bits to give it a shine. The last item we came up with was a small soda bottle that could be part of the fire. As I brain stormed, I thought of painting the newspaper to make it into a fire. My teacher also made the suggestion to burn the paper a little for effect. Since I had planned on searing the rolls, it made sense and seemed like a cool effect.

Putting the project together changed the picture in my mind substantially. First off, the paint was too flammable and the painted paper went into flames too fast to get a searing look. Instead, we took ads that had reds, oranges and blues to use for the flames, and while we lost several more sheets, we finally got them in. Secondly, the paper itself was almost impossible to shape after being seared, which meant the flames had to look as is once we were done. My wife had to help me with the burning of the paper since I kept roasting the entire piece to ash. She had more experience in doing so. Thirdly, the bottle was larger than anything and looked to take away from the rest of the fire.

However, once we had the bottle in the center, something came to my mind and the project went from a realist look to an abstract. My mind pictured the bottle as being the focus of the piece, not the logs. Doing that, I began to picture what the bottle could be and thought of someone being burned in the witch trials. From there, getting the logs set up was easy. One thing I was very proud of was the agent used to hold it together. Instead of glue, we used wax. It gave it a different feel to use wax to hold it together and it held rather well. The shards of the broken CDs gave it a sharp and shiny feel and I was very proud of the searing of the rolls. They came out looking like logs!
